First things first. I know you’re thinking “why do these rolls look funny?”

Let me answer that for ya. A little someone that she was being economical. She thought she was cooking for herself so she decided to make a small batch. But she didn’t have the right pan for placing these rolls in. And what do you know? They decided to rise horizontally rather than vertically! Who is this great person, you ask? Why, you’re looking at her!

Now that we’ve got the initial awkwardness out of the way, can we get back to business? These rolls are no joke people…! Never have I dared to experiment with yeast . Besides my tried and tested pizza dough, I’ve rarely tried my hand and creating / trying recipes that contain anything but refined flour. But of course, we all try to make healthy choices along the way, don’t we? And Oats – being the wonder cereal that it is – makes for a great binder. These oatmeal dinner rolls contain part refined flour, part oatmeal and the usual – yeast, salt etc. They are low on fat (no butter) and can easily be converted to a vegan recipe by substituting the milk / cream wash with something else.

And best of all? these dinner rolls work for any meal of the day. And they retain their fluffy texture all day long!   (more…)

Naan Bread (with Yeast)

This super simple Naan bread recipe on the stove top yields amazing & authentic results! The Naan made this way tastes just as a restaurant Naan – IF not better!

If you were to step into an Indian restaurant and gaze around, chances are you spot these beautiful, spongy Naan breads on almost every table. They’re just so elastic yet soft at the same time that make them so fantastic to pair with spicy sides. Sure, they aren’t the best breads to bet your health on. But once in a while, go ahead and treat yourself to something as exotic and yet as humble as a Naan.

There is another Naan recipe on this blog. And that was kind of an attempt to recreate the texture of a restaurant Naan without using Yeast. While I still love that recipe, I’ve also discovered that using yeast in the Naan dough definitely pays off. If you’re looking for the authentic texture, you absolutely should consider using yeast in your dough.

Another point to note is that Naan is often cooked in clay ovens, which are impossible to store at homes. So you can either bake them in the oven (which would be a slow and boring process) or speed up things by directly cooking them over the fire. I don’t know if I can claim this as the most authentic recipe there is, but I can promise you a restaurant quality Naan in just 15 minutes (that is of course, minus the waiting-for-the-dough-to-rise time).    (more…)

First things first: Swirls add a pinch of happiness to the food. Am I right or what? 😀 I’m a big believer in spending little time cooking and as much time eating. But I do like a little zing in my food. I mean, how often can you eat the same bread over and over again? I am a carbaholic and I love bread. But a little twist every now and then makes eating bread a much more fun experience. And making swirl rolls are just so darn easy, that I often forego a pizza or a tortilla for these babies.

Sorry to have called these pesto swirl rolls babies. But these are adorable looking and just a pleasure to devour! Serve them with my super healthy barley vegetable soup for a complete meal.

If you’re like me, you probably stock some pizza dough in your freezer at all times. If you don’t, well a) WHY AREN’T YOU? and b) It doesn’t take much time to make the dough from scratch either. (If you’re looking for a healthier version, I’ve got a great whole wheat pizza dough recipe too) And the filling is where you bring on your A-game! There are literally 100s of pesto varieties and you get to switch things up every time you make these rolls.   (more…)
