(Reposted from 2014!)

Navratri translates to 9 Nights. ūüôā The festival of Navaratri / Navratri lasts for 9 Nights and 10 Days, during which time 9 versions of Shakti (or the Goddess) are worshiped. ¬†As all Indian festivals are, this period too is celebrated with great pomp and show! Traditions vary from region to region, but largely – people follow a simple, sattvic diet, worship different Goddesses and share the “Prasad” (which is the food offered to the Goddess) with their friends and family. You can read a lot more about this festival here.

Food during Navratri is simple and light on the stomach (unlike other festivals where its all about deep frying!! ūüėÄ ). Meat products are usually avoided during this period. Most people confine their diets to fruits and fruit juices and eating just once during the day. While South Indians avoid onion, garlic from their diets, North Indians are known to be more strict with their diet and allow only certain types of flours and grains to be consumed during the period. It would be difficult to exactly tell you what is followed, since traditions tend to vary so much. However, I’ve tried to put together a list of Navratri prasad recipes commonly¬†prepared in various households.

Cheesy Garlic Buns

These cheesy garlic buns exude a fabulously subtle garlic flavor Рone that runs through every bite of these softy & fluffy rolls.

Once again, my love for Garlic translates into a recipe created exclusively for carbaholics such as myself.

These cheesy garlic rolls are my take on the regular dinner rolls and garlic bread. After the highly popular how to cook garlic bread post, I bring you yet another bread recipe made from scratch. Only this time, they are in the form of dinner rolls. And flavored with garlic and cheese and mixed herbs.

The garlic flavor in these rolls (or buns, as I like to call them) aren’t too overpowering. It is subtle, yet distinct. The cheese is just right – it enhances the flavor and provides another layer of texture. And overall, these rolls are just fluffy and delightful. The concept of making these rolls is pretty similar to most bread recipes; and yet – you’ll find that a few changes in the dough can give you a wonderfully fragrant bread!¬†¬† (more…)

Green Lentil and Oats Burger

This Green Lentil and Oats Burger is a healthy twist on the regular veggie burger; packed with proteins and fiber!

Sometimes, it is nice to give up the crazy¬†addiction for fast food and cook something light, refreshing and healthy! Keeping up with the promise I made to myself in the beginning of 2015 (to make healthy lifestyle changes), I’ve been consciously opting for ingredients that are healthy. Take Green Lentils (or Green Sprouts, if you may) for example. Packed with proteins and rendering a great texture when cooked, they are wonderful for making patties.

I’m not going to lead you to believe that a healthy lentil and oat burger will be¬†infinitely tastier than your average burger. Health food can only do so much. However, the nuttier flavor kinda grows on you, leaving you satiated for a long time after.

If you’re looking to make a healthy vegetarian (vegan, even) choice, then do give these green lentil and oats burgers a try.. (more…)

Baked Potato Wedges Recipe | Spicy Roasted Potato Fries Recipe - written by Kavitha Ramaswamy of Foodomania.com

Potatoes are humble vegetables. Inexpensive and incredibly flexible, they make for some of the best savory food creations.

Take these baked potato wedges for example.¬†These spicy, crispy, roasted potatoes are all you need out of comfort food. And because they’re baked, you’re doing yourself a favor by cutting out all the fat. Still not the healthiest dish around, I’ll admit. But when you go high on starch, you could benefit from reducing the fat at the very least, yeah?

You can use your favorite combination of spices to customize these wedges the way you want. In fact, I always like experimenting with the seasoning, just so that I could enjoy the variety. These extra crispy baked potato wedges are quickly becoming a Friday-night staple. I freaking adore them and I’ll bet you would too! ūüôā¬†¬† (more…)
