A quick look at the recipes on this blog will reveal 2 things: I’m obsessed with chocolate and rice. There is no dearth of recipes using either of the 2 ingredients. When it comes to dessert, I love using chocolate more than anything else. And when it comes to entrée, the desi soul in me automatically looks for something with rice in it.

I mean how could you not love rice right? It is fluffy, flavorful and such a delight to eat. This recipe for Masala Bhaat is wonderful – not just because it is so easy to make and tastes delicious, but also because it is such a wholesome meal when served with a bowl of yogurt.    (more…)

This keerai kootu features in our meals at least once a week. With all the health benefits spinach boasts of, and the fact that none of us really like eating green leafy vegetables raw, it seemed a good idea to make a simple dish that goes well with another one of our staples – rice!

Here is a quick, fresh summer salad to spruce up your day! This sweet and spicy mango jalapeno salad is everything you’d want in a light, healthy salad – it is quick, easy, has simple flavors and tastes delicious.

Add some grilled chicken or cooked beans to this and you’ve got a wholesome meal.  In fact, it is so versatile that it serves as an excellent topping on burgers, nachos and pizzas too (of course, after cooking).

Kunukku may possibly be an all time favorite “tiffin” tea time snack in my household.

I have fond memories of my paternal grandma making this exquisite snack abound. I’d always watch her make kunukku after kunukku with patience that our current generation seems to lack. She’d freshly grind the dry chilli, followed by wet parboiled rice and soaked lentils. She had an innate sense of how smooth or coarse the batter should be and she’d always use the right amount of spices and salt to make the batter taste perfect. With utmost precision, she’d drop equal portions of the batter into scalding hot oil, making the perfect sized kunukku pieces.

The art of making kunukku is easy to master. It requires a little practice, for making equal sized balls with a sticky batter like this one isn’t always easy.  But with easy alternatives such as spoons or ice cream scoops, you can make your own perfect little kunukku pieces.
