Baklava …. a pastry so rich and delicious from the Middle East!

Though Baklava is a sweet of Middle Eastern countries and it can be made in many shapes.I have used the phyllo sheets to prepare & Instead of honey,I have used sugar syrup to glaze.So,friends, enjoy this yummy rolls !!


phyllo sheets 12
butter 1/2 cup / 1 stick
for filling
almond coarsely powdered 1/2 cup
pistachio 1/2 cup coarsely powdered
Shredded coconut flakes (powdered)/ coconut powder 1/4 cup
sugar 1/3 cup
cardamom powder 1/2tsp
For Syrup
sugar 3/4 cup
water 1/2 cup
lemon juice 1tbsp
pistachio sliced 1 tbsp to garnish

-Prepare the filling by mixing all the ingredients listed for filling.
-Thaw the sheets as per packet instructions and remove one sheet at a time.The unused sheets should be covered with a plastic film and damp tea cloth on top other wise it may dry out and tear.
-Spread out one sheet on a clean dry surface and lay the next sheet on top of the first one such that it over laps,keep the shorter surface facing you. Lightly brush with butter on the lengthwise and breadth wise.
-Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
-Leave about half inch space at the shorter side and put 2 tbsp of filling evenly .Roll it with phyllo sheet and lightly brush the surfaces when you roll.

-Repeat the filling when you reach the center and roll again till you finish. Brush butter over the closed end and also on top.
-Repeat the same for all sheets till you can accommodate a total of 6 rolls in a 8*8 size pan.
-Brush the top with butter ,the rolls should be snugly fit and using a sharp knife cut three equal portions in the rolls.

-Place it in the center of the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes till golden brown in color.
-Remove and leave to cool.
-Prepare the sugar syrup by boiling the sugar & water in a sauce pan and till it reaches 1/2 thread consistency.Pour the lemon juice over the prepared rolls .Sprinkle sliced pistachio on top.
-Let this cool and is ready to serve !!

-Thaw the phyllo sheet as per packet instructions and refrigerate the unused sheets.
– If the sheets tear out accidentally,adjust it with another layer of fresh sheet.
– You can use any nuts of your choice for filling.
– The lemon juice is added to prevent sugar from crystallizing
