Chocolate Swirl Cake

Let us take a moment to appreciate the beauty of these cupcakes. Although these aren’t perfect, the swirly patterns make these cupcakes Über fancy. And if only I weren’t so stingy with the amount of flour, I would have ended up with normal sized cupcakes. As it happens, I always like to halve, quarter or sometimes even divide the amounts by eight for any recipe. I don’t like to cook a lot – the reason being – who’s gonna eat if it tastes like crap? 😛 And hence, my cakes are always tiny, sometimes almost too flat to look like pancakes! But that’s okay. All I need is to test the recipe, click pics & we’re in business! 😀This recipe can even be made into a normal round swirl cake,. If the swirly patterns are too much for you, leave it out. Just scoop the batter into the molds & bake. They’ll still taste delicious. But if you’ve got the time, interest and skills, take a simple piping bag, fill it up with cake batter (any cake batter, actually) and pipe them into beautiful designs. As the cake bakes, the design, although vague, is retained. It does look pretty! 🙂

Here’s what you need –

Grease & line cake / cupcake molds

Preheat oven to 150 C / 300 F

Gently mix the flour, coco powder & baking soda

To softened butter, add powder sugar.

Beat them together until the mixture is smooth & creamy

Sift in the dry flour mix

Add a couple tablespoons of milk

Mix well to form a thick batter. If it is too thick / clumpy, add a couple more tablespoons of milk.

Optional: To get the swirly patter, fill a pastry / piping bag with the batter. Fill the cupcake mold with the batter – squeeze the batter out in circular motion to get a swirly pattern.

In preheated oven, bake for 20-30 minutes or until completely done. (insert a toothpick or dry piece of spaghetti in the center of the cake, if it comes out clean, it is done)

To decorate, press the center of the cakes a little in. Place a small block of chocolate in the center and let it sit in the warm oven for 5 minutes until it melts. (this can be done only if you’re baking them as cupcakes)

Remove, place an M&M on each cupcake and serve warm.
