Jeera Rice | Cumin Pilaf

Here’s one of the simplest one pot meal recipes from the archive.Jeera (means cumin) Rice is cumin flavored rice. Whenever you’re pressed for time and you are out of veggies, you can turn to this fail proof recipe. Pair it with Raita and you’re good to go! 🙂 I’ve made this so many times when mum’s away and I’m starving! 😀 I use a pressure cooker for this but feel free to use a Rice cooker too.

(Print this Recipe)

Prep Time: 5 min
Cook Time: 10 min
Serves: 2-4 people

1 cup Basmati Rice (or any rice, preferably long is fine)
1 medium Onion finely chopped
1 Bay Leaf
2 sticks Cinnamon
4-5 Cloves
4-5 Green Chilies (cut vertically. remove seeds if you can’t eat spicy)
2 TBsp Cumin Seeds
1 tsp Ginger-garlic paste
1-2 tsp Salt (or as per taste)
1 TBsp Oil
1 & 3/4 cups Water

Wash the rice well

Heat the oil in a Pressure Cooker

Add all the whole spices – Bay leaf, cloves, cinnamon, cumin seeds & mix

Add the green chilies & fry for a minute.

Add the onions, ginger-garlic & sauté until light golden

Add salt & mix

Then add the washed rice & sauté for around 2 minutes.

Add the water & mix well. Taste and adjust for salt

Pressure cook it until just ONE WHISTLE.

Open, mix lightly with the backside of a spoon or use a fork & serve with some side-dish (like this delicious Chole Masala)

1. Basmati or Jasmine rice is preferred because of its aroma. However, any other rice would work too. But the water quantity would differ with different types of rice
2. You can also use a Rice Cooker to make this recipe
