Mamidikaya Pappu, as it is called in Telegu, is a delicious, subtly tangy dal with raw mangoes! This simple & genius recipe hails from the South-Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, and its a perfect comfort food for the summers. Summers in India come with bountiful gifts of produce. And Raw mangoes are one such not-to-miss ingredient! The mangoes in this case are cooked along with the dal, thus infusing their quintessential sourness into the lentils!

India is famously known for its many preparations of dal. From East to West, North to South, every region has recipes that glorifies the humble lentil, and celebrates it with different styles and flavor profiles. Whether its Dal Tadka from Punjab, or the Sambar from Tamil Nadu, or this lip-smacking Mamidikaya Pappu from Andhra Pradesh, the one common thing about all these dishes is that they instantly remind you of home. The feeling of comfort attached to a good bowl of rice & dal, is unparalleled.

I once made a delicious Raw Mango Sambar, and was blown away by how delicious the combination of raw mangoes and dal was. While that recipe borrows from the traditional principles of making a sambar, this mamidikaya pappu is simpler, more straightforward and involves fewer steps. The tadka or tempering of oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, ginger, garlic, chilies, coriander seeds and asafetida elevates the simple dal even more. And when you serve this with a bowl of hot rice & ghee, you will not thank yourselves for making this simple culinary masterpiece!

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup Toor Dal
  • 23 Tbsp Yellow Mung Dal
  • 1 cup chopped Raw Mangoes
  • 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 23 Slit Green Chili
  • 2 cups Water (+ more to adjust consistency)
  • 1 Tbsp Veg Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • a few Methi or Fenugreek Seeds
  • 12 tsp crushed Coriander Seeds / Coriander Powder
  • 23 sliced Garlic Cloves
  • 1 tsp minced Ginger
  • 1/2 tsp Hing or Asafetida powder
  • Handful of Curry Leaves
  • 1/2 tsp Red Chili Powder
  • 12 tsp Salt (adjust to taste)
  • Fresh Coriander or Cilantro leaves – for garnish

Instructions

Prep:

  1. Wash the two dals well. Soak for at least 1 hour. (this allows the dal to cook faster)
  2. Add the dal to a pan along with the raw mango chunks, cover with enough water. Add turmeric powder & 1 green chili. Mix well
  3. Pressure cook for 10-12 whistles or until the dal is soft cooked
  4. If you don’t have a pressure cooker, you can cover the pan with a lid & boil for 45-60 minutes or until the dal is soft cooked. Keep monitoring & adjusting water so as to not burn the dal.

Tadka / Tempering:

  1. Heat oil in a pan
  2. Add mustard seeds; when that splutters, add cumin seeds & methi seeds
  3. Then add the ginger, garlic, chili, crushed coriander seeds, hing or asafetida powder & fry couple minutes
  4. Add red chili powder & fry for a few seconds
  5. Add the cooked dal & mango mixture, salt to taste & mix well
  6. Bring the dal to a boil, adjust seasoning if required, and switch off the flame
  7. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves
  8. Serve with roti or hot rice & ghee
